The work is computational modeling of spatial-temporal systems. A storm is a state on a grid. An outbreak is a state on a contact surface. A catchment is a state on a terrain. If the software cannot hold that field — store it, step it, join it to the landscape — it is a picture, not a computation.
Employment has been the same problem in different clothes: an agent that has to retrieve and decide, an event mesh that has to keep a p99, a monolith that has to die without a weekend, a sensor fleet that has to arrive in seconds, a nightly job that has to finish before morning. The through-line is a distributed state that someone eventually prices as risk.
The degrees are not a pile of credentials. They are one discipline, built in three layers, then pointed at physical systems and sharpened with methods.
Computing systems so a distributed state can live across machines. Applied and computational mathematics so the state can take a time step. Geospatial data science so the field stays attached to the world it claims to represent. Weather and climate risk sits over the rest: whatever the field is, someone has to price the exposure.
I studied computer science at the University of Wisconsin and have been a software engineer since 2021 — Uline, Johnson Controls, Terracon, Northwestern Mutual, Allstate. The jobs got closer to systems that already have a physical or financial consequence.

Multi-step agents on Bedrock, retrieval over insurance data, and decision APIs that actuarial teams can actually call.

Millions of financial events a day. The p99 was the product. Stream layout and backpressure were the work.

Anti-corruption layers, traffic shaping, and feature flags so the old system could die without a big-bang weekend.

Sensor fleets, an MQTT broker, and a time-series store. The backlog was measured in minutes. It needed to be seconds.
